The Legal Landscape of Sportsbooks in Wyoming
For years, lawmakers in Wyoming have taken a fairly relaxed approach toward the gambling industry. Native American casinos have been operating in the state since the early 2000s. There are now four of these land-based gambling establishments operating here.
Shortly after the removal of PASPA in 2018, various lawmakers in this state began pushing to legalize sports betting. Each attempt to approve sports gambling legislation between 2018 and 2020 fell short. Finally, in April of 2021, a bill called HB 0133 gained bipartisan support and was signed into law by Governor Mark Gordon.
The first Wyoming sports betting apps went live in September of 2021. DraftKings Sportsbook was the first to begin operating in the state, followed by Fanduel Sportsbook, BetMGM Sportsbook, and Caesars Sportsbook. PointBet has gained approval to launch in the state, yet has yet to formally begin offering sports wagering options in Wyoming.
The process for these companies to earn online sports betting licenses was straightforward. They first had to pay a licensing fee of $100,000, valid for five years. Renewing these licenses costs $50,000. All of the legalized sports betting operators in Wyoming must pay a 10% tax rate on their gross proceeds.
HB 0133 initially allows for five online sportsbooks to launch in this state. There is no set cap on the number of online sportsbooks that can operate here, meaning that more can eventually launch in the state.
The Wyoming Gaming Commission is responsible for monitoring sports betting in the state. This regulatory body performs audits of the online sportsbooks in the state, ensures all taxes are being paid, tracks sportsbook revenue, and more.
Wyoming’s sports betting industry continues to perform very well. The state regularly reports a total sportsbook monthly handle of more than $15 million. Many experts predict that the number will increase as the years go on.
Unfortunately, those looking to make bets in person here are out of luck. There are no retail sportsbooks in Wyoming. HB 0133 only allows for online sports betting in the state, meaning it is unlikely that any retail sportsbooks will launch here in the near future. That has been a major source of debate among various Native American groups in the state, several of which operate tribal casinos and are now pushing lawmakers for the ability to launch retail sports gambling operations.
