A point spread bet is a popular type of sports betting where the bookmaker handicaps the favorite team by a certain number of points to level the playing field. In this bet, you can either bet on the favorite team to win by a certain margin (the point spread), or the underdog team to lose by fewer points than the spread or win outright. Let’s use an example from the NBA to explain further:

Imagine that the Los Angeles Lakers are playing the Boston Celtics and the point spread for the game is -6.5 for the Lakers. This means that the Lakers are the favorite team and are expected to win by at least 6.5 points. If you bet on the Lakers to cover the spread, they must win by 7 points or more for your bet to be a winning one. On the other hand, if you bet on the Celtics to cover the spread, they must either lose by fewer than 6.5 points or win outright for your bet to be a winning one.
