The final week of the PGA Tour season has arrived and what a season it’s been. I know golf isn’t the most exciting sport in the world, but even if you’re just a casual golf fan you know this has been a wild ride. Between Brooks vs Brooksie, Morikawa winning another major, Old man Phil winning another one, Patrick Cantlay just being in contention every single week, John Rahm having a career year when he’s not being told he has tested positive for covid; The list goes on and on. This week, the season comes to an end at East Lake Country Club and we are in for a treat. With the new format, players are starting at different scores. This benefits the players at the top of the Fed Ex points standings. That said, I definitely think there are some long shots that can definitely be profitable as the season comes to an end.
We can start off with a couple of tournament matchups I really like this week. A few players who have been extremely hot over the last month are still getting zero respect. A perfect example is Erik Van Rooyen. He is at the bottom of the leader board as he is one of five guys to begin the tournament at even par, but has been on an absolute heater the last two tournaments. Over the last four weeks, he has finished 5th, 7th, 37th, and 1st. He is paired up against Billy Horschel who I think is just going to have a really tough time at a tough course.
The Pick Erik Van Rooyen -120 vs Billy Horschel
Another matchup I absolutely love for the tournament is Dustin Johnson against Justin Thomas. Thomas is starting at -4 on the week and Dustin is starting one stroke behind him at -3. Since winning at the Masters, Dustin has struggled here and there but both players have had somewhat a rollercoaster season by their standards. Dustin won here last year and he seemed to have turned the corner around last week especially with how he played over the weekend.
The Pick Dustin Johnson +130
The top 5 finalists I will be on this week include a few people that I do not necessarily think they will win, but plenty of value considering the new rules for this tournament. I will also include two that I think will fall out of the top 5 to make things interesting as well.
Jordan Spieth Yes +300
Sam Burns Yes +350
Dustin Johnson Yes +300
Bryson Dechamblow (Brooksie) No +120
Tony Finau No -110
The tournament winner is a tough decision to make. It is difficult not to bet Patrick Cantlay as he will automatically be starting the tournament in first place at -10. In my heart of hearts, I do believe he will be victorious as he has been the best player and the most consistent player on tour. At the same time, it is also no fun picking a golf to win the entire tournament at +250. The two golfers I selected, Dustin Johnson and Cam Smith, have much more enticing odds but will need to perform well the entire weekend to win.
Dustin Johnson +1800
Cam Smith +2200
Bet responsibly, drink responsibly, and cheer irrationally as this is the end to the PGA season and buckle up for an amazing end to the season. Next up is The Ryder cup in just a couple of weeks!
